The Sept. 21 Arthritis Foundation Walk in Boston has special meaning for the 19 members of the BWH Joint Patrol. They are walking in memory of Jean Jackson, MD, and Peter Barry, MD, two BWH rheumatologists who passed away this year.
“Needless to say, Jean and Peter’s contributions to the Arthritis Center and our patients have been enormous,” said Jonathan Coblyn, MD, of Rheumatology.
The Joint Walkers are striving to raise $5,000 through the walk for the Arthritis Foundation, which supports patient care and education. BWH is the single largest recipient of research funds from the Arthritis Foundation. Last year, the hospital received more than $1 million from the foundation.
The team is getting creative in its fund-raising efforts. “We’re sponsoring a department dress-down day,” said team captain Kori Berardino, practice manager for the Arthritis Center. “If you buy an Arthritis Foundation Walk T-shirt for $10, you can wear it with jeans on a dress-down day to support the walk.”
BWHers throughout the hospital, patients, families and friends are invited to join this energetic team. The Joint Patrol hopes to recruit at least six more walkers to reach their goal of a minimum of 25 people.
“The walk will be fun for everyone,” said co-captain Brandi Abber, medical assistant in the Arthritis Center. “Participants can walk a one- or three-mile course or do yoga if they are non-walkers.”
The walk kicks off at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 21, at the Prudential Center. Registration opens at 9:30 a.m., and a celebration with food and entertainment follows the walk. Longtime TV sportscaster Bob Lobel is the honorary chair.
