Joe Camillus, MBA, MPH, in June began as administrative director in the Department of Emergency Medicine, overseeing the administration and operations of the department. Camillus is responsible for ensuring the success of the related clinical, financial, research and academic components associated with the department, including the BWH Emergency Department, which receives 55,000 patient visits a year, and extensive humanitarian, international and emergency preparedness programs.
“Joe’s exceptional educational background, his rich experience within BWH and his natural leadership abilities are the perfect blend for this key position,” said Ron Walls, MD, chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine.
Camillus joined BWH in July 2006 as a Deland Fellow working with Michael Gustafson, MD, MBA, vice president of the Center for Clinical Excellence. Most recently, he assisted Debra Rogers, executive director of Cardiovascular Services, with the planning effort for the move into the Shapiro Cardiovascular Center.
Prior to his work at BWH, Camillus served as deputy director of the Allegheny County Department of Human Services in Pittsburgh. He earned a master’s degree in public health from Harvard, a master’s degree in business administration from Yale and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame.
Camillus cites Gustafson and Rogers as wonderful mentors who have prepared him for his new role. Today, he is excited to join the Emergency Medicine team. “Our department boasts the world’s finest emergency physicians, nurses and administrative staff bar none,” he said. “I’m excited to learn from and work with the best.”
