Drawn by free health screenings, health seminars, opportunities to talk with physicians, celebrity guest appearances and diving lessons, 74,000 people turned out last weekend for the second annual Boston Health & Fitness Expo, sponsored by Partners HealthCare and 7 NBC/CW56.
At the BWH exhibit, more than 630 participants lined up for free cardiovascular screenings. The BWH Vein Center also provided more than 150 varicose vein screenings, while the STRATUS Center for Medical Simulation intrigued Expo-goers for the second year in a row with hands-on demonstrations of CPR and intubation techniques on its life-like mannequins.
BWH clinicians took to the stage to give presentations and answer patients’ questions on topics such as Living with Leg Pain, Common Sports Injuries in Women, Atrial Fibrillation, Making Parenting Possible and Yoga and Your Heart.
The Center for Reproductive Medicine provided information on building healthy families and, adjacent to the exhibit, the Brigham and Women’s Plastic Surgery at Faulkner team had their newest laser and other information available for Expo attendees.
BWH and hospitals throughout the Partners system teamed up for the event, offering BMI readings, skin cancer checks, bone density screenings and more. In addition to health screenings, Expo participants delivered do-it-yourself weather forecasts, received style tips from Channel 7’s Gretta Monahan and watched healthy cooking demonstrations. Dance classes, a giant Operation game, virtual games and puppy-petting provided plenty of entertainment for families.
