With 450 to 500 workers onsite every day during the summer, the pace of construction at the Carl J. and Ruth Shapiro Cardiovascular Center is heating up.
Installation of the steel framework and prep for the panels is underway on the lower floors of the new building as well as the façade of the Amory Building. Next month, crews will install the metal panels on the exterior of the lower floors and the curtain wall on the Amory building. Also in July, crews will begin to start the landscaping work that will include the installation of sidewalks around the building.
Inside the building, the trades are chasing each other from floor to floor. The sequence of finishing off a floor—hanging sheet rock, taping, sanding, priming, painting, ceiling work, millwork and flooring—has each next operation starting every two to three weeks on a given floor.
On the lower levels between Shapiro and 75 Francis St., there are now four of the 10 planned openings. The building will have power in July—a major construction milestone.
The third of the three pairs of escalators are being hoisted in place for installation, and the first two elevators are to be delivered for construction use in October. This will enable the removal of the exterior hoist on Fenwood Road, which currently transports all workers and materials on the job.
“There’s a tremendous amount of activity on the site as the exterior gets finished off and the fit-out of the floors gets into high gear,” Jonathan Katz, senior project coordinator for BWH, said.
