On Nov. 10, providers can apply for their mandatory National Provider Identification number online. Computers and assistance are available at One Brigham Circle in the IS Computer Training Room between 8 a.m. and noon.
All providers—including physicians, physician assistants, massage therapists, physical therapists and others—are required to obtain this National Provider Identification number.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services established the National Provider Identifiers for all health care providers as required by HIPAA. Eventually, providers will not need to use different identifiers for each plan. The National Provider Identifiers are unique 10-position numeric identifiers to be used for electronic claims, eligibility inquiries and responses, claim status inquiries and responses, referrals and remittance advices. The identifier remains the same throughout providers’ careers.
