Brigham and Women’s Hospital mourns the loss of Mary Michalowski, a dedicated 40-year employee, who passed away Aug. 17. She was 79.
Mrs. Michalowski, of Dedham, began her career at the Boston Lying-In Hospital and joined BWH when the hospital formed in 1980. She worked at the patient information desk at 75 Francis St. on weekends and holidays. Last year, she was honored with a standing ovation at BWH’s Service Awards for her 40 years of service, where she noted that her co-workers were like family to her.
Mrs. Michalowski was well known for her personal touches, like slipping a congratulatory note under a co-worker’s door and greeting patients with her warm smile. She brought cakes and woolen socks to the security guards who stood outside the hospital’s entrance in the winter.
“Mary was helpful to everyone she came in contact with,” said Christine Royse, manager of inpatient accounts for Patient Access Services. “She was always very pleasant and cheerful.”
Royse added, “Mary was reliable, too. She never called in sick or missed a day in all those years, except for during one blizzard and when she had surgery.”
Mrs. Michalowski was the beloved wife of the late Paul Joseph and cherished mother of Robert of Dedham, Jeanne Thomas of Harwich, Paula Castrichini of Winchester, Philip of West Roxbury, Anastasia Jewitt of Switzerland and the late Peter. She was adored by 11 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
A funeral Mass was held for her at St. Susanna’s Church in Dedham last week.
