DR.James Ioli's interest in podiatry began on a sixth-grade field trip when he, a model Boy Scout, splinted a classmate's sprained foot. Determined to succeed, he developed that initial intrigue into a career he is visibly passionate about. Today, as a mentor, his knowledge and zeal have generated a synergy with the inquisitive and enthusiastic nature of student Stephanie Pierre, whose motivation to become a doctor reminds Ioli of himself at her age.
As one of 23 high school students in the Student Success Jobs Program (SSJP), Stephanie is getting a head start on an ambitious career. Ioli, chief of BWH's Podiatry Division, has shown her many clinical aspects of podiatry, while administrative coordinators Kim Seales-Smith and Alexis Brimage supervised the administrative responsibilities that the Office for Women, Family and Community Programs (which runs SSJP) pays Stephanie to perform in the Podiatry department.
Ioli likens the rapport with SSJP participants to that with residents. “You help them think, they help you think,” he said. “It's a synergistic relationship that creates excitement for both parties.”
His encouragement and support boosted Stephanie's confidence and inspired her to take on extra responsibilities, such as setting up for surgical procedures and sterilizing equipment. “His sense of humor makes me comfortable and creates a great atmosphere,” said Stephanie, a resident of Roslindale and junior at Boston Latin Academy.
As Stephanie grew in her role, she gained knowledge beyond health care. Ioli and Brimage, a business student, helped guide Stephanie as she began her college selection and application process. Her mentors were overjoyed when she was chosen to participate in a selective summer program at Tufts New England Medical Center, where she will work for a pediatrician before returning to SSJP in the fall. “You get excited about her reaching her goals,” said Ioli, who encourages other clinicians to become involved in this beneficial program. “You give part of yourself and hope she does the same for someone else along the way.”
