Thursday, March 9, marks the first ever World Kidney Day, as the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) and the International Federation of Kidney Foundations (IFKF) combine to increase awareness of chronic kidney disease and its associated cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, and draw attention to the global need for early detection and prevention of chronic kidney disease.
Locally, BWH's Renal Division has been staging valuable information sessions at health centers, church halls and other meeting places in Boston neighborhoods to increase awareness of kidney disease among high-risk populations in recent months. "Community outreach is a significant part of BWH's mission, and the Renal Division is working hard to increase kidney disease awareness in Jamaica Plain, Roxbury, Dorchester and other neighborhoods," said Ajay K. Singh, MD, clinical director of the Renal Division.
Just last week, research assistant Pierre Debrosse and project manager Paula Hertello of the Renal Division participated in an awareness session at Roxbury Community Comprehensive Health Care. "We shared a lot of information on kidney disease, diabetes and hypertension," Hertello said. "We had a great response, and they invited us back to hold another session next month."
Research assistants Patty Pankievich and Chrissy Gnadt, nurse educator Terry Moore and Bharati Mittal, MD, are actively involved in the Renal Division outreach efforts.
