The NICU hosts birthdays every day, but the Sept. 21 celebration of a volunteer's 80th birthday took the cake for biggest party last month. Originally of the Netherlands, Enny Wiederhold is a former nurse who came to the U.S. during World War II. She has been volunteering as a baby cuddler in the NICU for more than 10 years, faithfully committing at least three days per week to BWH's tiny patients.
Wiederhold's skill keeps her in high demand among the nursing staff, said Nurse Manager Marianne Cummings. When a mother asked Wiederhold to provide Kangaroo (skin-to-skin) care to her baby, Wiederhold rose to the occasion for the duration of the baby's lengthy stay.
“Enny's heart, spirit and skill serve as an inspiration to us all,” Cummings said. “She is a tremendous asset to the NICU and we're lucky to have her as part of our team.”
