Several BWH clinicians remain active in bringing direct care to Gulf region residents of Louisiana, Mississippi and now Texas in the devastating wakes of hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
βIt is important to stay focused on improving the public health conditions in the aftermath of the hurricanes' devastation,β said Michael VanRooyen, MD, of Emergency Medicine. Based on his extensive experience in large-scale humanitarian crises around the world, he explains that disaster aid and relief typically subside as time goes on, despite ongoing health needs of those displaced families.
This week in Washington, D.C., Drs. Gregg Greenough, Hilarie Cranmer and Jennifer Leaning, all of BWH's Department of Emergency Medicine, participated in the ongoing planning of relief efforts at the headquarters of the American Red Cross. Also, Lynn Lawry, MD, a BWH internist who spends much of her time with the International Medical Corps in Washington, was involved in planning.
Emergency Medicine's Cranmer, Susan Bartels, Christian Arbelaez, Jennifer Chan, Malini Singh and Tom Stair were deployed to the Gulf area to provide assessments for the American Red Cross at shelters. BWH's Department of Medicine also sent Drs. Dan Mudrick, Jason Block and Louise Schneider, who helped in various roles in the region.
Nurses Corrine Miller Foster, RN, of Emergency Medicine, and Rhonda Martin, RN, of the Float Pool, volunteered and traveled to the Gulf region to provide care in the temporary shelters. Foster this week responded for her second deployment.
