JCAHO Survey Concludes on a High Note
As many BWHers know and experienced last week, surveyors were on-site from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) to conduct BWH’s regularly scheduled accreditation survey. Last week’s intense, five-day evaluation was a success and BWH fully expects to effectively address the surveyors’ findings.
“We appreciate everyone’s efforts in preparation for and during this challenging process. Your teamwork and dedication was evident and reflected in the high standards we communicated to the surveyors,” said Gary L. Gottlieb, MD, MBA, BWH president, who joined Karen Nelson, executive director, Clinical Compliance and Risk Management, at a celebratory reception held in Carrie Hall last Friday to thank all staff who were involved in the survey process.
BWH was one of the first medical centers to be evaluated using JCAHO’s new tracer methodology. According to Nelson, last week’s survey proved to be a learning process for both sides. “I am very proud of staff, who communicated their roles in patient care with ease and effectively presented the high level of service delivered at BWH as it relates to effective communication, information management and quality improvement,” she said.
Along with the new tracer methodology, JCAHO evaluations will take on a more continuous process, as surveyors’ future visits to BWH will not necessarily be announced. “Our accreditation will now be based on a more continual assessment and data presentations. I look forward to your continued cooperation and insight as we are asked to more regularly quantify the great care we deliver,” said Nelson.
