In 1999, more than 3,000 BWH staff members spoke up and participated in the hospital’s first staff survey. As employees from throughout the organization gave their voice to issues central to the values of the organization, leadership voiced their collective resolve to act upon the results that were shared at a special Town Meeting in December. “Over the course of the last several weeks we have been developing an action plan dedicated to reinforcing our strengths and addressing other areas identified for improvement,” said Cheryl Locke, vice president, Human Resources. “We have now defined improvement goals tied directly to the results of the survey.” In particular, five areas have been identified as dimensions for improvement. They include leadership, quality patient care/customer service, communication, respect, and team work. During the next phase of the action plan, teams of employees from throughout the hospital will be assembled to address each of these five dimensions. These teams will collaborate with existing improvement teams and validate approaches to issues raised by employees. “Once we have adopted and communicated the full plan, we will move forward with implementation,” said Locke. “Next fall we will conduct a series of mini-surveys to monitor our progress on these important dimensions. We will assess the feedback from these surveys and modify our plan as necessary and ultimately do another full staff survey in mid-2001.” Employees wishing to participate as members of the survey action teams should contact Martha Pyle Farrell at ext. 5741, their manager, or their human resources generalist. Sign-up sheets also will be available throughout the hospital.
