The first annual Domestic Violence Advocacy Awards at BWH’s Brookside Community Health Center in Jamaica Plain were held on Friday, May 5. Nine Brookside employees were honored for their extraordinary efforts to increase safety and improve the health of survivors of domestic violence. Governor Paul Cellucci presented the awards and spoke at the ceremony. “Because community health centers like Brookside offer a unique window into this serious community health problem, we can develop creative and culturally appropriate services for victims of domestic violence,” said Paula McNichols, Brookside Executive Director, who was honored during the ceremony. Said Cellucci, “Today’s awards are really a recognition of the wonderful things a team of caring, creative, and committed individuals can accomplish when they look beyond their job description and think about how they can better serve their patients and the community. I applaud both Brookside Health Center and BWH for their extraordinary commitment in tackling this difficult problem.” This year’s award recipients were McNichols; Elba Crespo, PhD, director, Family Services; Estela Perez, LICSW, and Niza Troncoso, domestic violence advocate, both of Domestic Violence Intervention Service; Patricia Feeley, RNC, NP, coordinator, OB/Gyn Services; Jo-Anne Dillman, MA, RNC, NP, director, English High Teen Health Center; Steve Colchamiro, DMD, director, Dental Program; Stephen Shaughnessy, director, Operations; and Sgt. John Benjamin, chief, Security.
Survivors’ Advocates Honored
BWH honored 175 of Boston’s advocates for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault with a luncheon at the Ritz-Carleton Hotel on Thursday, April 13. The event brought together advocates from more than 40 organizations and numerous systems dedicated to addressing domestic violence (e.g. health care, criminal justice, child protection, welfare, community-based programs) to acknowledge the daily challenges of their work and the successes of their colleagues. The featured speakers for the second annual luncheon were Carmen DelRosario, director, Domestic Violence Program, Boston Public Health Commission; and Janet Fine, chief, Victim Witness Assistance Program, Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office. Judy Ann Bigby, MD, served as the Master of Ceremonies. The Women’s Health Leadership Forum and the Office for Women, Family and Community Programs co-sponsored the event. Passageway, BWH’s domestic violence advocacy program, organized the luncheon.
