Megan Fix was determined not to be an emergency physician. “My father is an ED doctor, and I really didn’t want to follow his path,” said Fix, who explains that she was initially interested in everything from obstetrics and gynecology to pediatrics. “I truly wanted to branch out and make my own way.”
However, during her fourth year at Stanford University’s Medical School, Fix had a change of heart while completing her emergency medicine rotation. “I was really drawn to the constant activity in the ED; the pace is very exciting,” said Fix. “I also got to treat patients of all ages, from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds, which was great. I definitely like the diversity of the patient population in emergency medicine.”
The Michigan native has since made her way to BWH, spending her first two weeks of residency in the Emergency Department. “I’ll always remember my first day in the ED,” said Fix. “My first shift was so exhilarating, even though it was hard to believe I was actually a doctor. I think of how far I’ve come in just a few short weeks with the help of the amazingly supportive staff here at BWH. This is definitely what I want to be doing.”
