Brigham and Women’s Institute for the NeurosciencesLeading the Effort
The departments of Neurology, Neurosurgery, Psychiatry and Radiology have combined their collective expertise to develop a new Institute for the Neurosciences. Continuing a long tradition of innovation and excellence in these areas at BWH, the creation of BWINS (Brigham and Women’s Institute for the Neurosciences) will further strengthen the nationally renowned care and research produced by all four departments. “Many patient cases and research projects at BWH often involve the expertise from all four disciplines, so this collaboration formally brings together clinicians and investigators to find new answers,” said Peter M. Black, MD, chair, Neurosurgery, who is leading this effort alongside Martin A. Samuels, MD, chair, Neurology; Jonathan F. Borus, MD, chair, Psychiatry; and Steven E. Seltzer, MD, chair, Radiology. “The Institute’s resources will be focused on tackling complex patient cases and studies that require a multidisciplinary approach,” added Samuels. “The Institute will help BWH physicians and researchers gain a better understanding of brain and other nervous system disorders, enabling them to derive more successful treatment plans.” Borus added, “Our departments’ long history of combining clinical and teaching efforts to address brain tumors, epilepsy, neuropsychiatric disorders, stroke and other cerebrovascular disorders, and several additional areas will be further advanced by the new interdisciplinary translational neuroscience research initiative recently funded by a $1.7M donation to BWINS. This initiative provides support for trainees, junior faculty, and senior investigators from our departments to combine their expertise to find solutions to complex clinical neuroscience disorders.” The knowledge, treatments and other innovations that result from BWINS have the potential to reach beyond BWH to the Partners system. According to all four department chairmen, BWINS will assist in fostering an increased collaboration with complementary programs at MGH to benefit Partners patients now and in the future.
