Women’s Health Pioneer Celebrated as First Elizabeth F. Brigham Professor
In April 23, the leaders and faculty of BWH and Harvard Medical School (HMS) gathered in the atrium of HMS’ Gordon Hall to celebrate an historic milestone in women’s health for both institutions. Together they paid tribute to JoAnn E. Manson, MD, DrPH, the newly appointed incumbent of the Elizabeth F. Brigham Professorship in Women’s Health, the first endowed chair created in that discipline.
Hailing Manson as “a trailblazer in every aspect of her career” as a researcher, teacher and clinician, BWH President Gary Gottlieb, MD, MBA, said she “has earned for us the respect of the world for our work in preventive medicine.” The leader of hundreds of studies on the impact of preventive therapies as well as diet, exercise and other lifestyle factors on chronic diseases in women, Manson is a principal investigator of the Women’s Health Initiative, which found last summer that the risks of postmenopausal estrogen-plus-progestin therapy outweigh the benefits for most women.
