At Harvard Medical School's second annual collaborative symposium "Update in Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery," Jon Einarsson, MD, MPH, director of BWH's Division of Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery, led an intensive course at Boston's Omni Parker House that featured lectures, hands-on workshops and the viewing of live telesurgeries, including some occurring at BWFH.
Targeting physicians, gynecologists and urogynecologists, the course was taught by Harvard faculty and guests from the Cleveland Clinic in Florida and the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. It covered topics including laparoscopic surgery and suturing, endometriosis surgery, management of pelvic pain, hysterectomy, urogynecology, robotics and more.
Event highlights included live telesurgeries streamed to the Omni Parker House from BWFH and the Cleveland and Mayo clinics. Procedures included a laparoscopic myomectomy, a minimally invasive surgery that removes uterine fibroids, which was performed by Einarsson, who hosted the last day of the course remotely from BWFH. Karen Wang, MD, and Sarah Cohen, MD, MPH, performed a laparoscopic total hysterectomy--removal of the uterus--at BWFH as well.
"The technology is getting better and better," said Einarsson. Course participants now can view live surgeries in high definition, when just a few years ago footage was grainy. "I can talk with the audience and they can ask me questions, creating a truly interactive educational experience."
