On May 22, BWHers heard firsthand from BWH and BWFH colleagues about their experiences using Epic at other institutions during a panel discussion called "Life with Partners eCare: A Clinician Perspective." Epic is the software vendor hired by Partners to design and implement Partners eCare.
Moderated by Amy Miller, MD, PhD, chief medical information officer for Inpatient Clinical Services, the panel included Luis Lobón, MD, MS, chief of Emergency Medicine at BWFH and vice chair of Community Emergency Medicine at BWH; Alice King, MS, RN, Partners eCare application manager; and Amy Silver, RN, case review coordinator at BWFH and Newton-Wellesley Hospital. The event was part of BWHC's organizational readiness planning for Partners eCare, scheduled to go live on May 30, 2015.
Lobón, who used Epic at Cambridge Health Alliance, shared that the software expedited, simplified and optimized care for his patients. "One of the best assets an emergency room physician can have when dealing with an acute or critical situation is immediate access to a single system documenting the continuum of care for any patient."
While working as a neurology nurse at the University of Virginia, Silver used Epic and found the sticky notes, smart text and best practice advisory features to be very helpful in streamlining and improving note taking and patient care.
As the application manager for Epic's Emergency Department application, King is part of the collaborative team responsible for incorporating content decisions into the Partners eCare design. Previously a member of the BWH Emergency Department leadership team, she was able to provide insight into how the Epic system is being customized and optimized at BWHC.
"So many of us have committed countless hours to building the system and reviewing workflows, and soon will be participating in integrated testing and training," said Dot Goulart, MS, RN, Organizational Readiness director at BWH. "To hear colleagues who have been through these experiences and used the system at other locations talk about their experiences was very reassuring and helpful in setting expectations. We are looking forward to offering more events like this in the coming months."
