Partners purchases about 12,000 new desktop PCs each year through a single vendor, at an annual cost of around $10 million. Partners IS estimates an average lifespan of four to five years for a PC that gets everyday use. As such, most of the purchases are to replace PCs that have run their course.
Working with hospital CIOs, Jim Lacombe, of Partners IS, and Todd Turner, of Partners Materials Management, decided to lead an effort to reduce the cost of buying and servicing PCs across the system.
"The team worked on two fronts," said Kevin Schlicke, vice president of Partners Finance Operations. "One was getting a better price for each PC, and the other was revising our service plan with our vendor to gain efficiencies and eliminate unneeded services."
So what's the bottom line?
By negotiating a reduction in price and revising the vendor's service plan, the team was able to lower the price of a PC from $820 to $590, a cost reduction of more than 25 percent. Overall, the total savings will amount to more than $2 million a year.
