A packed Bornstein Amphitheater was abuzz with excitement for the Dec. 6 Town Meeting, which kicked off with a warm welcome from BWH President Betsy Nabel, MD, and a video highlighting the hospital's history of excellence as part of the BluePrint celebration.
In a slightly varied format from past Town Meetings, Nabel and other hospital leaders answered questions about topics ranging from diversity to BWH's staffing strategy that were submitted by employees ahead of time. Vincent McDermott, vice president of Finance and Real Estate for BWH, gave an informative and lively presentation about the Brigham Building for the Future, which drew many questions from attendees.
"The Brigham Building for the Future is our future," said McDermott, of the proposed 12-story building that will integrate clinical and research floors, with construction slated to begin behind the Shapiro Cardiovascular Center during the summer of 2013. "Translational research will be built into this building, and it will provide opportunities for care and collaboration from bench to bedside. But the building is much more than just bricks and mortar. It will be a place at the intersection of advanced medicine and transformational research." The building is expected to open in 2016.
Wanda McClain, vice president of Community Health and Health Equity (CCHHE), later shared BWH's dedication to the community by highlighting many of CCHHE's outreach programs and collaborations.
"Our commitment to our community and to the underserved started early in our history, with our commitment to women and their children," said McClain. "That continues today through our Birth Equity Initiative, which is focused on improving birth outcomes for underserved populations who have experienced persistent disparities. It is one of many programs we have that focuses on the health equity side of our agenda."
