Tower 12C Unit Coordinator Mary Quinn is always a step ahead in identifying patients’ needs and finding ways to keep them comfortable, such as offering them a pillow or blanket, for example. Her calming demeanor puts everyone on the unit at ease, including her colleagues.
“She is the glue that keeps the unit together,” said Jenna Moran, RN, who works alongside Quinn. For her commitment to teamwork and dedication to patients, Quinn received the 2012 Administrative Support for Patient Care Areas Award during a ceremony last month.
“I’m deeply honored for this nomination and award, but I have to credit all of my colleagues on the unit. It’s truly a team effort,” said Quinn.
Now in its third year, the award recognizes Patient Care Services administrative staff across BWH. This year, Quinn was selected from among 24 other nominees.
“The nominees of this award truly go above and beyond in their role,” said Jackie Somerville, PhD, RN, senior vice president of Patient Care Services and chief nursing officer. ”They are role models and mentors who truly make a difference in the lives of patients, families and staff.”
Leo Buckley Jr., executive director of Business Services for Patient Care Services, spoke about the department’s initiative to encourage Patient Care Services administrative staff to seek educational advancement opportunities through the National Association of Health Unit Coordinators.
“I’m happy to report that in the past three years, 75 unit coordinators have passed the exam and are certified. Many more are scheduled to take the exam this fall,” Buckley said. “This speaks volumes about their commitment to their colleagues, our patients, and their desire to continue to make BWH one of the best hospitals in the country.”
