2011 was certainly the year of the transplant at BWH, but the hospital also celebrated many other milestones in patient care, research, education and community service. January
The inaugural issue of Safety Matters, a monthly e-newsletter about patient safety, is published.
Hospital leadership announce the BW/F strategic planning effort.
February
Patient satisfaction scores top the charts, with the hospital receiving all-time high scores in many Press Ganey categories.
“Find a Researcher” launches as BWH’s first data repository of faculty investigator profiles.

A multi-disciplinary team performs the nation’s first full face transplant on 25-year-old Dallas Wiens.

BWH is recognized for its commitment to diversity by Diversity Inc.

The Emergency Department opens the Charlie Pod, completing the ED redesign project.

BWH and DFCI launch Profile, a research study that will advance scientists’ knowledge of cancer by testing for nearly 500 cancer mutations in 41 genes.
Brigham and Women’s Advanced Primary Care Associates opens as a patient-centered medical home, offering an innovative approach to team-based care.

The Biomedical Research Institute establishes the Center for Regenerative Therapeutics.
Ambulatory Services kicks off Patient First, a campaign that highlights respect, communication, teamwork, professionalism and service.

BWH performs a bilateral hand transplant on 65-year-old Richard Mangino.
BWH launches the Violence Intervention and Prevention Program to support patients impacted by violence.

The Fenwood Inn and Binney Street buildings open as part of the Massachusetts Mental Health Center Redevelopment Project.
BWH “clears the air,” announcing the tobacco-free campus initiative.

President Betsy Nabel, MD, outlines the hospital’s strategic planning recommendations at the Town Meeting.
BWH is named a Leapfrog Top Hospital for quality and efficiency.
