Last month, 149 participants dodged puddles and rain drops to attend the first annual Stork Fund Walkabout at the Franklin Park Zoo.
In support of the Stork Fund, the walkabout was an educational event for both adults and children. Interested walkers could learn about car seat safety, nutrition, dental hygiene, exercise and sun protection at booths. Each child held a “passport” that guided them through the walk and was stamped at different locations.
As Leah O’Brien, a walking mother, described, “The indoor attractions were awesome and kept the kids distracted so they didn’t realize it was raining outside. Knowing that at every stop on the trail there was a smiling volunteer with a stamp for their passport made it like a game for them. They were on a mission to get every stamp, despite the rain!”
This year’s event raised more than $20,000 to support different programs and initiatives at BWH for healthy moms, healthy pregnancies and healthy babies through the Stork Fund. “The walkabout was about creating a community around the Stork Fund, and our families were troopers dealing with the weather. We were inspired and tremendously thankful for such dedicated participants,” said Bill Florentino, director of Fundraising Events.
