The BWH Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) received a Share the Health award from The Mothers’ Milk Bank of New England (MMBNE) this spring. The award honors hospitals that have pioneered and modeled efforts to use donor milk as a standard of care for fragile babies.
“This recognition reflects the extraordinary work of BWH lactation consultants, dietitians, nurses and physicians who have supported this important endeavor,” said NICU Nursing Director Marianne Cummings, MSN, RN. “Tina Steele, a NICU lactation consultant who was instrumental in creating this program, will be accepting the award at a ceremony June 5.”
The MMBNE is a non-profit organization that provides pasteurized and carefully screened donor human milk for newborns in need throughout New England. As a standard of care, BWH’s NICU uses the milk for babies born under 3.5 pounds and at less than 30 weeks gestation.
