John Fanikos addresses a crowd-filled Bornstein Amphitheater during BWH’s first Anticoagulation Management Service Patient Seminar last month.
For the many Americans who take anticoagulants, or medication to reduce blood clotting, understanding the therapy and its side effects can be overwhelming.
In an effort to reduce barriers to understanding the treatment, BWH hosted its first Anticoagulation Management Service Patient Seminar last month, drawing more than 230 patients interested in hearing the latest in anticoagulation therapy and helpful tips to manage their strict anticoagulation medication regimen.
“We’re very pleased with the response,” said Julie Atay, PharmD, MBA, Anticoagulation Management Service manager. “As part of our ongoing commitment to providing the highest quality care to the BWH community, we developed this forum to better assist them with the management of their anticoagulation therapy.”
The event, which took place in the Bornstein Amphitheater, opened with welcoming remarks and an introduction by John Fanikos, RPh, MBA, followed by presentations from experts including Samuel Z. Goldhaber, MD; David DeiCicchi, PharmD; and Cheryl Silva, PharmD, CACP.
Patients also had the opportunity to meet face-to-face with the BWH Anticoagulation Management Service staff. Patients regularly speak to the staff over the phone, as the strict anticoagulation medication therapy requires close monitoring to prevent blood clots.
“I am very proud to be part of such a hard-working team that is so dedicated to their patients. Every single member of the AMS staff pitched in to make this a rewarding event for our patients,” said Atay.
