After nearly two years of clinical training at BWH, Daniel Young last week joined his colleagues in celebrating National Radiologic Technology Week for the first time as a registered technologist, rather than a student.
“I’m very lucky to land here. It made the transition from student to technologist so much easier,” said Young. “I already knew my co-workers, the instruments and my manager.”
Young is among 200 radiologic technologists celebrated by the hospital last week with an array of events including a lecture series, a poster presentation and a buffet dinner. Technologists also received jackets with their department logo. The events recognized the work of radiographers and also highlighted the success of those who have trained at BWH, and BWH’s commitment to training the next generation of technologists.
“We offer the best training because today’s students are tomorrow’s radiologic technologists,” said Carl Patturelli, RT, MEd, MBA, director of Education for Radiology.
Through five affiliated programs, including Bunker Hill Community College, MassBay Community College, Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, MGH-Partners Institute for Health Professionals and Regis College, students receive clinical training and classroom instruction at BWH before beginning their careers as registered technologists of radiology.
Angela Covington recently was hired as a radiologic technologist.
“I hope to celebrate many more of these weeks in the future,” said Covington.
Executive Director of BWH Radiology Brian Chiango knows the vital role technologists play.
“Our technologists perform hundreds of imaging scans throughout the hospital each day, and every single technologist is committed to providing the highest level of patient care in a safe and professional manner,” said Chiango, yet another BWHer who began as a student and then was hired as a radiologic technologist. “They really embrace their responsibilities to not only learn new procedures and techniques, but also teach the next generation of technologists. You can see why they are so deserving of this week that honors their dedicated service to patients.”
