The Marcia Lemkin Foundation holds its sixth annual 5K Road Race and Walk on Sunday, Aug. 24, to benefit research and education in the Women’s Lung Surgery Program at BWH.
“Lung cancer will account for an estimated 26 percent of all cancer deaths in women in the U.S. this year,” said Yolonda Colson, MD, PhD, thoracic surgeon in the Women’s Lung Surgery Program. “Thanks to the dedication of families like the Lemkins, we are working every day to find a cure for this disease.”
The Lemkin family established the foundation in 2002 in honor of Marcia Lemkin, a wife and mother, who succumbed to lung cancer a year earlier. Since that time, the foundation has sponsored an annual 5K in her memory.
Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. on Aug. 24 at the JFK Plaza at Lowell City Hall, and the walk begins at 10 a.m. The first 125 people who pre-register online at www.marcialemkinlungcancerfoundation.org/events.htm will receive a free jersey.
