BWH’s Endoscopy Institute was one of 14 endoscopy centers from the across the globe and one of only two from the United States named as a founding member of the OMED Centers of Excellence. MGH’s Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Unit was also named to this exclusive list.
OMED, the World Organization for Digestive Endoscopy, named the inaugural class of centers of excellence based on each center’s commitment to providing international educational opportunities in digestive endoscopy. “Our hope is that this group will be affiliated to OMED and work closely with us in our mission to promote high quality endoscopy throughout the world,” OMED, a world federation of national digestive endoscopy societies, declared in its March 10 announcement.
BWH is committed to training some of the world’s brightest minds in endoscopy, said David L. Carr-Locke, MD, FRCP, FASGE, director of BWH’s Endoscopy Institute. “When it comes to our specialty, it’s not a very big world, and many of us here at BWH work hard to make it smaller,” he said.
BWH routinely hosts endoscopy students, graduates and trainees from all over the world. Gloria Fernandez-Esparrach of Spain and Fernanda Prata of Brazil are here now, and Matthias Kelleher, an engineering student from Germany, is set to begin a three-month fellowship here in April.
