In This Issue:
New Device Purchase
BWH has an obligation to its patients and staff to manage risks associated with medical devices. When considering the purchase of new devices, staff should contact Biomedical Engineering, which is responsible for:
• Evaluating the technology to ensure that it is safe for patients and employees
• Working with clinical staff to determine the most effective technology for the use model
• Performing a standardization and life-cycle analysis to ensure the device is appropriate given other technologies the hospital is using, and that it can be adequately supported for the life of the device.
Materials Management also should be involved in the negotiation of contracts and any disposables, accessories, or other items that BWH needs to consider in this purchase.
This week’s tip: Staff can obtain the BWH New Product Approval form at www.bwhpikenotes.org/HospitalwidePoliciesAndManuals/AdministrativePolicyManual/VII-12.doc, which outlines the process for approval for any new product, including medical devices, at BWH.
