Patrice K. Nicholas, DNSc, MPH, APRN-BC, in July was appointed director of Global Health and Academic Partnerships in the Center for Nursing Excellence.
In this position, Nicholas will develop a global health strategy for nursing practice, research, teaching and service. She will help shape a culturally competent care program to provide clinicians with an opportunity to advance their knowledge and skills in the care of diverse patient populations. Nicholas also will collaborate with academic programs outside BWH to establish innovative opportunities to enhance nurse education and identify pathways for BWH nurses to teach and mentor students.
“This new position will allow us to build upon the strengths within BWH nursing, advance our ability to provide excellent care to patients and families and join with colleagues and academic partners in a global health agenda,” Mairead Hickey, PhD, RN, chief nursing officer and senior vice president of Patient Care Services, said.
In addition to her position in the Center for Nursing Excellence, Nicholas will hold an appointment in the Division of Social Medicine and Health Inequalities (DSMHI).
Nicholas joined BWH in 1999 as a nursing administrator. She received a bachelor of science in nursing from Fitchburg State College and a master’s degree and doctorate of nursing science from Boston University School of Nursing. She was a postdoctoral fellow at the Harvard School of Public Health and received a master of public health degree with a concentration in international health. In 1993, she was a Fulbright Scholar focusing on the challenges of demographics in health care. In January, she will be a Fulbright Senior Scholar in South Africa.
