Save the Date:Sept. 17
The centerpiece for Boston's July 4th grand celebration this past weekend will serve as the starting line for another important event for BWH in September. On Saturday, Sept. 17, hundreds of participants will gather at the Hatch Shell on the Charles River Esplanade to begin the American Heart Association's (AHA) 2005 Heart Walk.
By participating in this fun, heart-healthy and family-friendly fundraiser, individuals have the opportunity to walk one, three or six miles along the Charles River. A leading beneficiary of funds raised by this and other AHA events, BWH has been selected to lead this year's effort.
The annual walk raises money for cardiovascular research, advocacy and education, and this year's goal is set at $1.3 million. To date, the AHA has raised $22 million research dollars for Boston hospitals. BWH has received nearly $6 million.
“Please join us for the walk as a way to thank the AHA for its commitment to better our novel patient care delivery, innovative teaching programs and groundbreaking research,” said BWH president Gary Gottlieb, who is serving as the chairman of AHA's signature fundraiser.
Since 1924, the AHA has helped protect people of all ages and ethnicities from the ill effects of heart disease and stroke. “The Heart Walk is one way for us to help combat the nation's number one and number three killers, which claim nearly 950,000 American lives each year,” said BWH cardiologist Kenneth Baughman, MD, who is serving as BWH's co-captain, along with Debra Rogers, director of Clinical Services.
To help BWH reach its $110,000 goal, walk or support a BWH colleague already participating in the event. E-mail Rogers to learn how to sign up for one of the BWH-led teams at drogers7@partners.org.
