After receiving radiation treatment for prostate cancer at BWH in 2004, Steven Baldi set out to spread the word on the disease through various media, including a column in his hometown newspaper in Melrose, the Internet and a video produced for local access cable. The 30-minute video, which features a frank interview with Anthony V. D’Amico, MD, chief of Genitourinary Radiation Oncology, has been shown on 15 local cable channels in Massachusetts and in Grand Rapids, Mich., where Baldi’s son lives. Additionally, it’s been posted on several Internet sites and received more than 500 hits in recent months.
In October, Baldi’s video, “The Prostate: Knowledge is Power,” won first place in the community impact category at the Alliance for Community Media Video Festival held in Vermont. “What started out as a 30-minute video for my local access cable station turned into something much bigger,” Baldi said.
Baldi, 58, has been cancer-free for almost one year, and he credits D’Amico and the BWH Radiation Oncology team with not only saving his life, but also infusing in him a desire to help others and spread the message of regular testing for prostate cancer. “Dr. D’Amico was so gracious, and everyone at BWH provided me with personalized care and made the whole process a lot less stressful than it could have been,” he said.
