Thanks to the three-point shooting of Edward “Buzzy” Calhoun, the Medicine Men of Pharmacy won BWH's Co-recreational Basketball League title for the third time in five years by beating the team from Security, Encore.
The Medicine Men (and women) advanced to the championship game on the strength of regular season record of nine wins and one loss and playoff victories over the Faulkner (Hospital) Flyers, and Encore defeated the Gamma Rays of Radiology. With eight wins and two losses, Encore finished the regular season in second place as the number two seed in the playoffs. The league has six teams, including the CND Neurodegenerates of Neurology and the Raptors of the Rehabilitation Services Group.
Jamal Cinelli of the Medicine Men won the league scoring title with a regular season average of 23.1 points per game. William Campbell of the Neurodegenerates placed second in the scoring race with 21.8 points per game, and Encore's Anthony Ravenell was third with 19.3 points per game.
The league also enjoyed a new venue this year, Basketball City. Players raved about the courts there as a vast upgrade from the school gym that previously hosted the league.
“The League thanks the entire BWH Perks Office and, in particular, Jacqueline Ashby, for continued support at the conclusion of another phenomenally successful season,” Dave Seaver of Pharmacy's Medicine Men said. Seaver and teammate Paul Szumita serve as league co-commissioners.
