Dan Dedrick, MD, director of residency education in the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine, started off this week in Chicago, where he received the distinguished Parker J. Palmer “Courage to Teach” Award from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
Dedrick was one of ten 2005 outstanding residency program directors recognized for their dedication to teaching. The ACGME accepts nominations from its 8,000 accredited residency programs that educate and train nearly 100,000 residents in 27 medical specialties.
“I’m flattered and pleasantly surprised to get an award for doing my job,” Dedrick said. His humility belies the glowing accolades received in nomination letters and praise from colleagues and residents.
“Dr. Dedrick has dedicated his entire professional career to training residents,” said Omid Farokhzad, MD, the former resident now on Anesthesiology staff who coordinated the effort to nominate Dedrick for the prestigious award. “I can think of no one more deserving of this award than Dr. Dedrick.”
Throughout his career, Dedrick has been counted among nationally-known leaders in anesthesiology curriculum and examination development and is well-known for making residents’ education his top priority.
At BWH where the walls in Dedrick’s office are festooned with pictures of former residents and their families, he is known as “an endearing father figure,” Farokzhad said.
Ron Hurley, MD, executive vice chairman of Anesthesia, added, “Dan is a wonderful mentor to our trainees, who feel comfortable approaching him at any time including nights and weekends. We are all delighted he is being recognized for his devotion to his residents with this award.”
