When patients at 850 Boylston St. need an MRI test, they no longer have to trek to BWH’s main campus. Earlier this month, a new, state-of-the-art, full-body MRI machine—BWH’s 14th magnetic resonance imaging device—was installed at the Ambulatory Care Center.
“Having an MRI here at 850 Boylston St. means a lot to patients and staff,” said Philipp Lang, MD, MBA, director of the Musculoskeletal Division within the Department of Radiology. “It allows us to offer offsite patients detailed imaging of any joint in the body, the spine, the head and neck, the brain, abdomen and, principally, any other part of the body.”
Previously, physicians at 850 Boylston St. used an extremity magnet, which produced images of certain joints, including the ankle, knee, hand and wrist, but could not photograph harder-to-reach areas of the body. They can now produce detailed images of any joint in the body, just like at BWH’s main campus.
A reading room opened in conjunction with the installation of the new MRI, allowing MRI technologists and radiologists to provide speedy turnaround for test results. Within two to three hours of an MRI scan, patients will have a complete analysis report from their doctors.
O. B. Hill Trucking and Rigging Company workers hoisted an 18,000-pound, 1.5 Tesla magnet up and over the roof of 850 Boylston St., carefully placed it in the courtyard and wheeled it through a door with only a fraction of an inch on either side to spare.
