Some 13 recent graduates from Tobin Middle School came to work at BWH this summer as part of the Tobin Transition Program/BWH partnership. The students are working in Materials Management, Rheumatology, Transport, X-ray, Outpatient Services, and Obstetrics and Gynecology, among other departments.
The Tobin Transition Program supports students in grades 5 through 8 as they face the increasing responsibility of middle school and prepare for even greater autonomy as high school approaches.
“These are kids who obviously want to succeed but need to be directed to the right resources and shown the way,” said Tony Bosco, middle school transition coordinator. “They learn basic job readiness skills, including appropriate dress, being on time and following direction. Working at BWH equips them with a truly professional experience.”
Providing that experience are people like Joanne Robinson, medical assistant, Rheumatology Clinic, who has mentored Tobin students on the job for four years.
“It’s rewarding—for them and for me,” she said. “I try to instill in them the importance of this experience for their own growth. If they work hard, they will succeed. They may not want to work in this area, but they may see something else that interests them.”
