2001 Staff Survey Action Teams Take Their Best Shot at Improving BWH
BWH kicked-off its formal 2001 Staff Survey follow-up initiative — “You Spoke, We’re Acting” — on Thursday, July 18, by announcing the formation of three hospital-wide, multidisciplinary Staff Survey Action Teams. More than 100 staff and employees from 48 different departments have volunteered to participate on this year’s teams, which will work over the next 12 months to address concerns and respond to feedback from BWH’s second Staff Survey that was administered in September 2001.
At the kick-off, Matt Van Vranken, chief operating officer, who participated on the 1999 Leadership Survey Action Team, welcomed the group of employee volunteers and applauded their commitment to making a difference in the lives of their colleagues. He noted that the Staff Survey is “part and parcel of our culture.” “Staff and employees are BWH’s customers, too,” he said. “This initiative reaches the very core of customer service. We want to create an environment that makes staff feel good about themselves, their jobs, and differentiates BWH as a top place to work.”
To bring the volunteers up to speed on the analysis of the 2001 Staff Survey results, Cheryl Locke, vice president, Human Resources, presented a condensed summary of the survey data. She highlighted the developmental areas and opportunities that the survey teams will address, including Teamwork, Leadership and Communication. “The goal of these teams is to review and analyze relevant survey data and identify and develop plans for improvement,” said Martha Pyle Farrell, director, Operational Planning and Program Improvement. “You have an important role and exciting challenge ahead. Together we will shape BWH’s response to feedback from more than 3,000 colleagues.”
The groups were also addressed by Robin Vann Ricca, director, Organizational Development, Training and Diversity Management, who gave an overview of the team-building training and facilitation the department will provide.
Before the group dispersed to meet their fellow team members, Van Vranken passed along the following advice based on his experiences from two years ago. “Not only will you be a stakeholder in implementing hospital-wide improvements, but I can guarantee that you will leave this experience with at least one new friendship.”
