The Eleven Commandments of Healthy Living
Employee Group Supports Healthy Eating
As many Americans begin to contemplate their own solutions to shedding extra pounds brought on by the holiday season, a team of BWHers can show the way with their own success.
“Healthy Weight for Good,” a 10-week pilot offered by the hospital’s Nutrition Consultation Service, began in September 2003. Some of the original employees involved are still going strong, meeting independently after the program concluded, with the support of BWH nutritionist Tara Mardigan, who has been instrumental in helping the group realize such positive results.
One of the original groups decided to continue meeting on its own and invited guest speakers to their weekly meetings. “When we celebrated our one-year anniversary in December, we also celebrated the significant change in our weights and eating habits,” said Elaine Garland, administrative coordinator, Volunteer and Community Access Serv-ices, and member of the group.
While 23 employees completed the original program in two groups, a continuing group of seven employees recently wrote their own credo, the “Eleven Commandments of Healthy Living.” “We can now use these commandments to help future members of the program,” said Mardigan.
A new weight loss group is planned for this spring. For those interested in joining the group, email chosmer@partners.org. Visit www.bwhpikenotes.org to view the listing of the “Eleven Commandments of Healthy Living.”
