BWH recently faced the challenge of five separate paging system outages in one week. While no untoward patient care events resulted from these outages, Partners Information Systems (IS) and BWH management are addressing vendor support issues and revising internal procedures. Although all outages were related to unique, outside factors out of the vendor’s control, the occurrences tested the paging vendor’s support mechanism and BWH’s internal processes when faced with a loss of communications. As a result, the following responses and improvement measures are currently under way:
