On Wednesday, November 12, the Friends of BWH hosted their 2003 Annual Meeting to wrap up a successful year. Approximately 100 Friends supporters attended the meeting. Following the business meeting portion of the evening, BWH President Gary L. Gottlieb, MD, MBA, introduced guest speaker Atul Gawande, MD, MPH. Gawande is an associate physician at BWH and director of the Center for the Study of Surgery and Public Health at Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Public Health. He is also a staff writer on medicine and science for The New Yorker magazine. For his presentation, Gawande read excerpts from his essay collection “In Sickness and in Health,” a daily account of his life as a resident at BWH, which was featured in The New Yorker. Following his presentation, attendees adjourned to the Cabot Atrium for refreshments. The Friends of BWH is a volunteer organization whose membership consists of donors, patients, physicians, staff, and friends committed to raising funds to promote the hospital’s mission through special events and various activities.
