If you ask Chuck Labins, senior project manager, Real Estate and Facilities, if he ever ran the Boston Marathon, at first the answer is “yes.” But if you wait a minute, then the answer is “well no, not officially.” Labins did complete all 26.2 miles and crossed the finish line, but as a “back of the pack” runner, he was not an official race participant. This year, as a member of Team Brigham, Labins will not only be an official Boston marathoner, but he will be one of hundreds running for a cause much greater than himself.
At BWH, Labins is busy preparing plans for the new Center for Advanced Medicine, a project that occupies a great amount of time and energy. To balance his work schedule with his marathon training, Labins wakes up at 5 a.m. to get to the gym for a 90-minute morning workout. “On Saturday mornings it is just like another day at the office,” he said. “I wake up before 6 a.m. to travel into the city and meet the rest of the team for a two to three hour run, depending on our training schedule.”
experienced marathoner, who previously ran in the New York City and Dublin marathons, Labins has been thinking for a while about completing a third official marathon. When he determined it was time to start running again, he also made the decision to revisit a familiar race course.
“I figured there was no better place to achieve my goal of running a third marathon than right here in Boston,” he said. By running the Boston Marathon, Labins was also able to make another very important decision – he chose to run for BWH.
After about a year of training on his own, Labins joined up with Team Brigham. “Being part of a motivated and dedicated group has helped me prepare mentally and physically,” said Labins. “Knowing we are all running to help raise money to improve the health of our community, keeps our spirits up and the team focused on a common goal,” he added.
Team Brigham, comprised of 78 runners, 12 of whom are BWH employees, has set a team goal of raising $375,000. Donations made to the team will help support BWH’s Community Health Initiatives Programs.
