Congresswoman Nancy Johnson makes rounds at BWH and meets with Partners President and CEO Sam Thier, MD
Congresswoman Nancy Johnson (R-Connecticut), chair of the Ways and Means Subcommittee on Health, visited BWH and Harvard Medical School on May 14. Her visit was planned following a meeting she had with Partners President and CEO Sam Thier, MD, in Washington. Johnson hoped to gain more knowledge as she continues to make key decisions as chair of the Subcommittee, which has jurisdiction over Medicare hospital funding. Such funding includes graduate medical education. As part of her busy agenda, Johnson joined BWH’s Marc Pfeffer, MD, Gilbert Mudge, MD, residents and medical students for cardiology rounds on 12C, which included a demonstration of BWH’s renowned computerized order-entry system and a trip to the Echocardiography Laboratory. Her schedule also entailed a visit to BWH’s Surgical Planning Laboratory, where Johnson joined Pablo Ros, MD, to observe the use of “virtual surgery” to better prepare for actual surgical cases. With the aid of 3-D imaging, physicians can plan complex surgeries using actual images of the patients. To learn more about other key issues facing BWH and Partners, all employees are encouraged to participate in the May 30 Town Meeting with Thier. In addition to answering questions, he will discuss external factors affecting Partners, what the BWH and Partners communities can do to deal with such factors and Partners’ goals for 2001.
Don’t miss the May 30 Partners Town Meeting with Sam Thier, MD, from 10 to 11 a.m. in the Bornstein Amphitheater. Questions can be asked on May 30 or pre-submitted via BWH’s intranet or by e-mailing the Public Affairs office at BWHBulletin@partners.org
