Over the past several years BWH has greatly expanded primary care, opening primary care centers throughout the greater Boston area. Now BWH's primary care physicians (PCPs) total more than 120 providing top-notch care to their patients, some of whom are BWH employees themselves. "When you join the staff of a top-ten hospital, you join the hospital's commitment to providing the best patient care possible. When you or your family needs medical attention, it makes sense to seek it at that hospital," says Leo Buckley, director, Business Administration, Patient Care Services. Buckley cited BWH's reputation and the convenience of seeing someone at work as reasons he choose a BWH PCP. For other patient/employees, the ability to see a BWH doctor near their home means they seek care at one of the off-site practices. "The Braintree primary care office is equidistant between work and home, and they have evening and weekend hours," says Patti Salamone, Administrative Ombudsman. "I feel very good going off-site for my primary care knowing that I would be hospitalized at BWH or Faulkner Hospital if the need arose." "The Brigham draws some of the best physicians in the world, so that whether on or off-campus, patients receive the highest quality of care," says David Fairchild, MD, director of Primary Care Services. "These physicians have access to the latest technology, such as the decision support computer programs, that directly enhance patient care." Patients who see a doctor in one of the primary care practices can get important information from seminars and lectures the practices offer. The Women's Health service line offers information sessions on symptoms of menopause, for example, and Brigham Primary Physicians offer a travel clinic and supporting information. In addition, BWH PCPs conduct research on primary care questions and mentor young physicians who are training to become internists themselves. "Like many of the PCPs on campus, I see patients part-time because of my teaching responsibilities and administrative duties," says Jamie Winshall, MD, Brigham Circle Medical Associates. "I feel these other pursuits enhance my role as a primary care doctor, rather than serving as a distraction. The hospital community as a whole benefits from the diverse interests of the primary care internists who practice here."
