Karen Kaufman Becker, nurse practitioner, Brigham Internal Medicine Associates (BIMA), passed away on Monday, October 23 at the age of 53. Kaufman worked at BWH for almost two decades, where she took care of thousands of patients, working alongside hundreds of staff and resident physicians. She worked in Emergency Department (ED) for one year, then spent the next 19 years at BIMA while still occasionally working in the ED at night. According to Phyllis Jen, MD, medical director, BIMA, Kaufman was “a pillar of BIMA, part of a team of people who day in and day out provide the glue for the practice. She was known by her co-workers for her steadfastness and commitment to the highest standards of patient care and education. She truly loved the patients, and saw the special, sometimes hidden qualities in every person. We have all learned so much of the non-textbook side of medicine from Karen. She was always there for everyone, and we will miss her beyond what words can say.” Kaufman graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Boston College in 1978, and went on to receive her master’s degree in nursing from Simmons College in 1980. She leaves her husband, Don Becker of Belmont, whom she married in 1990; and her sister, Linda Kliment of Webster, NY. There will be a fund established in Kaufman’s name for BIMA patient care and education. Donations can be sent to the Karen Kaufman Fund, c/o BWH Development, 116 Huntington Ave, 5th floor, Boston, MA 02116.
