BWH Town Meeting November 15 at 11 a.m.
The holiday season is just around the corner, and people are already thinking about all the gifts they can give to their loved ones. However, just a few blocks away from BWH are some kids for whom just a little bit of giving can go a very long way. At the Maurice J. Tobin School, approximately 98 percent of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Many of them do not attend school when the academic year begins because they do not have adequate clothing. A number of them cannot afford eye examinations and glasses. But the money that BWH employees donate to the Tobin Fund during the United Way/Tobin Fund Campaign works to help alleviate these problems, and many more. Three “Parenting Partners,” who are employed by BWH, work full-time at the Tobin School in conjunction with the Tobin Fund and the Greater Boston Food Bank to distribute brown bags filled with food to some Tobin School students’ families. The Parenting Partners also ensure that some of the most needy students and their families receive an entire Thanksgiving meal, complete with a turkey and fixings. The Tobin Fund has also been used to purchase winter clothing for students. Over $12,000 was allocated to send more than 150 students to summer camp last year. In addition, books and buttons for the Brigham Book Buddies program were purchased, as were books for the Take-Home Library program. United Way/Tobin Fund pledge cards can be turned in to department captains or representatives, or to one of the hospital’s several drop-off boxes. For more information on donating to the Tobin Fund, call Julie Rabinovitz, Office for Women, Family and Community Programs, at ext. 5759.
