Preparation is near completion and the groundwork has been laid for the Survey Action Teams to embark on their mission—to follow-up on employee feedback from BWH’s first-ever staff survey. The needs, concerns and suggestions introduced by the 3,000 BWH employees who participated in the staff survey will soon be addressed by employees who each volunteered to be sit on one of the five Action Teams—quality patient care/customer service, communication, leadership, respect and teamwork. “We’ve been quite pleased with the interest level in the Action Teams. Before the Action Teams get to work, however, we want to ensure they have the tools to be effective,” said Martha Pyle Farrell, director of Special Projects and co-director of the Staff Survey Leadership Team. Currently, training programs are being developed to equip the Action Teams with the necessary skills are being developed. In September, a kick-off event is planned to present the staff survey results and short and long-term goals of the five Action Teams. The kick-off event will drive the momentum for four-hour Action Team training sessions to take place in late September. Then, the Action Teams will be prepared to meet regularly and tackle their respective goals. Each 25-member team is comprised of individuals from departments throughout the hospital. One such participant is Patricia Mitton, technical service coordinator in the BWH’s Inpatient Pharmacy, who has volunteered for assigned to the Quality Patient Care/Customer Service Action Team and is eager to begin her involvement. “Even though we are typically behind the scenes, my involvement in the employee survey follow-up can bring the Pharmacy’s perspective to the table and ultimately have a hand in bettering patient-employee relations,” she said. Like Mitton, all other employees who volunteered their involvement were matched with the team that is most closely associated with their indicated interests. Each team has also been assigned executive sponsors and liaisons from the Hospital Management Committee, who will support the Action Teams’ progress. Their assignments are listed in the chart below. “Conducting the employee survey was only the first part of a larger project. The real work will be in constituting changes and enhancements to bring about an even more satisfying workplace for our employees,” said Cheryl Locke, vice president of Human Resources at BWH. Senior management and others have already begun to develop and implement changes and programs, which respond to the survey results. “The teams will help us continue to build and work toward our commitment. The more fulfilled and confident BWH employees are in their jobs, the better we can attend to our common goal—quality patient care,” Locke added.
