BWH’s Operating Room has implemented a formalized training program making it possible for groups of five BWH nurses with no prior surgical experience to shift their career focus to the OR
“The nurse trainees will be oriented to a selection of surgical specialties,” said OR nurse manager Claire Fitzgerald-O’Shea, RN, who explains that the training will be combination of classroom-style learning and hands-on experience through the guidance of preceptors. “We are pleased to be able to provide this opportunity to advance professional growth among nurses.”
In addition to the OR nurse preceptors, OR educators will be vital to acclimating the nurses in training. Educators include Helen Cluett, Jane Walion, Susan Twardy and Linda Daw. The first set of nurses to be part of the perioperative training program, who were selected from nearly 30 applicants, will begin their training at the end of April.
