Schoen Wins Achievement Award
Frederick J. Schoen, executive vice chairman of the Department of Pathology, was honored recently by the Society for Cardiovascular Pathology with its Distinguished Achievement Award for 2006 for his career-long contributions to cardiovascular pathology, in particular its relationship to biomaterials science and biomedical engineering. Schoen’s research contributions to the optimal design, evaluation and understanding of the complications of prosthetic heart valves and other cardiovascular devices have earned him international recognition. He plays a leadership role at BWH, HMS and the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology, and he coordinates efforts to translate basic science and engineering advances into practical applications for patients with cardiovascular diseases.
