Clinical Strategic Plan Unveiled
The just-released clinical strategic plan presents key strategies for BW/F
to achieve new growth and excellence in its mission over the next three to five
years. It will soon be integrated with research and teaching plans currently being
developed. Over the last nine months, several hundred clinical and administrative
staff provided input to the plan. It outlines core strategies including expansion
across the distributed BW/F campus and network, differentiation by key competitive
factors and strong financial performance.
The plan builds on the five centers of excellence announced back in 2001 –
cancer, cardiovascular services, neurosciences, orthopedics and arthritis, and
women’s health. These represent nearly three of every four BW/F discharges,
have significant outpatient programs and address the most pressing health issues
in our service area. The plan also maintains our core and key specialty services
that account for the other 25 percent of inpatient programs, that are integral
to serving our patients and supporting our centers of excellence.
Implementation of the plan calls for optimizing BW/F and 850 Boylston campuses
into an integrated and distributed campus. BW/F facilities will be redeveloped
to care for the most complex and sickest patients. Faulkner will continue as our
community teaching hospital, with the addition of an ambulatory care and surgery
building, and 850 Boylston is being redeveloped into a major ambulatory care center
with enhanced services, including a multispecialty women’s health center.
The strategic plan also focuses on key service differentiators that address the
BW/F mission of patient care, teaching and research. These include innovation,
quality and patient safety, service excellence and quality of work life.
Financial performance rounds out the clinical strategy, accomplished by maximizing
revenue, containing costs, improving efficiency and optimizing philanthropy.
“The strategic plan will guide our clinical enterprise over the next three
to five years, during a time of significant challenge and opportunity, ”
said President Gary Gottlieb, MD, MBA. “With this plan in hand I see a very
exciting and promising future as we build on our many strengths to serve the community
more fully.”
