Since Partners International signed a memorandum of understanding with the United Arab Emirates in January to refer patients here for tertiary care, there have been 32 admissions to BWH and 252 out-patient appointments as well as a similiar number at MGH. This has permitted BWH to expand its translation capabilities. International patient referrals are processed through the International Office. To meet the needs of international patients, who will likely be in the Boston area for only a short time, it is important to schedule consultations with these patients in a timely manner. For more information on the Partners International program at BWH, contact Gilbert Mudge, MD, at ext. 7140.
Revised Consent for Procedure form
A revised Consent for Procedure form is now available, designed with input from clinicians, to improve communication between members of the health care team and to increase compliance. The revised form combines procedure consent with other consent situations likely to be discussed with the patient at the same time, namely consent for the use of blood products and consent for Intravenous Conscious Sedation (IVCS).
The intent of this revised form is to alert other providers involved in the patient’s care to the other procedures to which the patient has consented or has refused.
The Consent for Transfusion of Blood Products is still available and is to be utilized for those situations in which transfusion is not coupled with a procedure.
The revised form for procedures in which blood products may be required is to be used in the Pre Admitting Test Center (PATC), physician offices, and other locations where consent discussions occur. As always, a progress note can supplement evidence of consent by describing the discussion of patient-specific risks, benefits, and alternatives. The revised form is approved for use at BWH, Faulkner Hospital, and DFCI.
This form (document #0515212 5/00) is also available in Spanish and can be ordered from Standard Register. When you have obtained the new Consent for Procedure, previous versions of this document should be discarded.
